“SOLITARY SOUL”

by Catherine Lee

smiles with topsy turvy thoughts
of all those formerly coupled routines
done equally as well, backwards,
high on heels, tippy toeing
while her flatted florsheim partners
made noise with seeming poise.
Her use-ta-be shapely legs flirted in,
peeked out of flimsy veiling,
swirling with eye delight for him,
danger for her to trip, fall, break.
Not just Ginger, all stilettoed
sisters of strut. Dogs barking,
now she rests,
with thanks
for memories, soft turf,
some sensible heels.

The McNay Art Museum: The Sole Sitter, 2013. Willlie Cole (b. 1955). Bronze sculpture on grounds. 72 x 27 x 42 in. Museum purchase with funds from the Russell J. Rogers Fund for the Arts.

Catherine Lee is a widely published neo-Beat writer who reads solo and performs with improvising musicians “on poem.” Among these were joint gigs (1986-87) with poet/hipster tedjoans. Lee began working with theater people in 2014, and is active with Seniors In Play, a reader’s theater troupe based in San Antonio. Lee twice secured city funding to write poetic dramas. Lee’s multimedia projects are archived on Soundcloud and VIMEO.
