A poem by Marie Studer

A Picture Muses

(Inspired by The Kiss – Gustav Klimt)

In droves of rucksacks and trainers
they swallow the alchemy of primary colours,

the gold-leaf of free-flowing cloaks –
of lovers in manuscript mosaics.

Some hold hands, remembering sheets of
pollen and pistil, tremors of sated desire;

more ponder the fin-de-siècle spirit,
deboning bodies breathing the cosmos;

and for a few, I am a tick on a list,
a keyring, tote or coaster.

In the quiet of Belvedere, I sometimes
drift to the figures of my becoming –

artist and muse pooling superlative gold
on the studio floor.
